GVEC’s Annual Winter Horse Health Seminar |
Saturday February 2, 2008, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm
Our annual Winter Horse Health Seminar was held at the Wheatland-Chili High School at 940 North Road in Scottsville on February 2, 2008. This popular event was offered to local horsemen free of charge, thanks to the generous support of many national and local sponsors.
This year Dr. Dan Keenan of Keenan McAlister Equine in Bordentown, New Jersey, offered some great tips on understanding lameness. His Lecture "A Leg to Stand On", included a series of video shorts showing horses that are lame in different limbs. He explained how to tell which leg is off and also demonstrated the various grades of unsoundness. Everyone came out of this talk with a better "eye" for lameness and a clearer understanding of how veterinarians diagnose it.
Dr. J.C. Thieke took the lameness expertise you got from Dr. Keenan a step further. His lecture "No Foot, No Horse", focussed on the latest advances in equine podiatry. Dr. Thieke's practice, Anoka Equine Clinic in Minnesota, is on the cutting edge of new developments in diagnosing and treating foot problems. Dr. Thieke gave you a fresh look at old problems such as laminitis and abcesses and told you what is new in our ability to find and treat problems that originate deep in the hoof region.
Three of our own GVEC veterinarians rounded out the morning with a lecture no one wanted to miss: "What Did the Vet Say? Why Did She Do That?" Veterinary practices and lingo can sometimes be confusing. Why do we do strange things like put a tube in one end of your horse and an arm in another? Dr. Amy Leibeck, Dr. Celeste Boatwright, and Dr. Amy Todd, put on a series of skits to illustrate basic veterinary procedures and vocabulary. This entertaining presentation gave everyone a better understanding of what we are thinking of as we do several types of exams.
We again hosted a trade show displaying exhibits of interest to horse owners. This year Master Body Worker Karin Kohl-Dyson presented live demonstrations of sports massage, stretching, and rehabilitative therapy. The morning also included our Educator of the Year Award, a raffle of several door prizes, and coffee and donuts.
If you were unable to attend the 2008 Winter Horse Health Seminar, watch it from the comfort of your easy chair. The 2008 seminar is available on VHS tape and can be picked up at the GVEC office.
